This was the first time in this edition the new Volvo 70s had to go up wind in 45-50 knots of wind. Sailing 14 knots into 13-foot seas. Many of the boats sustained unseen damage that lead to a sinking and hull fractures during the next, the Transatlantic, leg. I chronicled the sinking of Movistar and the loss of a crewmember aboard ABN Amro 2 during that leg for th Times.
