NY-Barcelona 2010, Estrella Damm and W Hotels

I was in Manhattan this week reporting for The New York Times on the New York to Barcelona Race. They left today (April 8, 2010), passing Ambrose Light at around 2:30 p.m. EST. This is a new World Record Course that will be ratified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council. The Council, who is the sole proprietor of what is and is not a sailing record, generally does not recognize courses for record status if there is a similar course but this one includes a very tricky 450-mile portion from Gibralter to Barcelona on the Mediterranean. There is also a historic tie between the two cities as a trade route.

My Times article discusses the process of establishing a new record course. Please enjoy this clip from my visit and wish these sailors luck on this new adventure.
